“Wisdom tooth” is a name for our third molars. Typically, these third molars emerge in the back of the mouth and have very little room to erupt due to preexisting teeth. Some people may be born without any wisdom teeth, while some may develop all four – two on the top and two on the bottom. Because wisdom teeth are the last to erupt and with so little room, they often end up growing in at weird angles, such as sideways. They may become stuck under the gum, only partially emerge, or push against neighboring molars. Impacted teeth can cause plaque to form and increase the risk of cavities. Impacted wisdom teeth are common and the main rationale behind wisdom teeth removal.
